Helping teachers have a greater impact on the lives of their students every day

Every Teacher Should Have at Least Two Websites

wordpress tutorials

I’ve always believed that every teacher should have at least two websites. Yes, two. Surprisingly, however, or perhaps not so surprisingly, most teachers don’t even have one website. They may have been given a page on their school’s website, but it most likely isn’t updated or it’s incomplete.

“Why do teachers need two sites, Sam?”

I’m glad you asked.

The first website is for your students and their parents. It should be a website that tells them a little about who you are and your expectations for your class. You can add announcements or reminders for upcoming tests or events. It should offer a contact email and even a current photo of you and your family. It should also display the daily updated homework assignments.

But Sam, I don’t have time to update my homework every day. I have to plan or I have meetings or I have duty after school. I wouldn’t be able to take time to update my homework page daily.”

I don’t have the time either. That’s why I don’t do it.

I mentioned in a previous post, in my first video tip, as well as in my first podcast, that you can have a student update your homework on a daily basis. All you have to do is set it up. I’m not going to go into the details of this, but it has worked great for my team. You can check out the video tip here if you want to learn more.

“But you said two websites, Sam. What would I need another website for?”

Again, I’m glad you asked.

Your other website would be for you to share your thoughts, opinions, wisdom, or cause with the world. There are so many teachers that I know who have amazing insights into the teaching profession, the state of the world, ideas to make society better, or who are passionate about an important cause. They have within them the ability to effect change in an area, but because their audience is only their close friends and acquaintances, they fail to make the difference that they should be making.  The Internet has become a door to a very large stage where you can reach millions of people with your message.  My particular message is for new teachers. I share what I’ve learned over twenty years of trial and error in this profession with new teachers, so that they don’t have to learn the hard way, thus providing a better education for their students, which in turn makes the world a little better. It’s my small cause.

I know teachers, however, who have experience in teaching students with physical and emotional disabilities who could and should share their expertise with the world through a website. They don’t, and it’s not because of lack of desire, but more of lack of knowledge. They don’t know how to create a website. Many think that it costs a lot of money to hire a designer, and with the teacher’s budget, that is just out of the question.

That’s where I come in.

I recently created a site that teaches people, specifically teachers, how to create a website for free using WordPress.com. It’s called:

StepByStepTutorials.WordPress.com

With the use of YouTube videos, I show people how they can create their own website. It really is easy and again, it’s free.

Every teacher should have at least two websites. One for the class, and one for the world.

Start today.

I look forward to answering your questions and shooting down your excuses.

Thanks,

Sam
